South German 2nd half 15th century

A South German carved wood figure of Christ as the Man of Sorrows, 2nd half 15th century

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. The lappet of drapery at one side reattached. Uniform older polychromy, only partially overpainted. A figure of the suffering Christ standing in contrapposto on a flat plinth. He wears the crown of thorns and holds His hands aloft to present the stigmata to the devotional beholder. His thin naked body is starkly modelled, and the long and dynamically draped perizonium is rendered in great detail.
Cracks and a replacement to the plinth. The crown of thorns possibly replaced. Minimal wear. Height 61 cm.
