A South German carved wood figure of Saint James, circa 1700

Carved in the round. With remnants of older polychromy. Figure of the saint designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. Saint James is depicted standing and holding an open book in his left hand. He wears a cloak and tippet as well as the scallop shell of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrims on the brim of his hat. His right hand probably originally held a pilgrim's staff.
The back of the hat brim replaced. Minimal wear. Height 62 cm.
