A Meissen porcelain saucer with the siege of Gibraltar

Painted with a depiction of the naval battle at Gibraltar inscribed "VESTUNG GIBRALTAR." Blue crossed swords mark with star and 4, dreher's mark. D 13.7 cm.
After 1783.

The siege of the rocky fortress off southern Spain, which lasted from 1779 to 1783, was the last major attack by the Spanish, who were attempting to wrest the territory from the British. The war years were marked time and again by heavy cannonades, the most famous of which took place on 13th September 1782.
