A Meissen porcelain cup and saucer with Jean-Jacques Rousseau

The cup painted with a bust of the philosopher in an oval reserve, the well of the saucer with two books and a flute amid clouds. Blue crossed swords mark with star and 4, cup with purple 13., saucer with gold L. H of cup 6.6, D of saucer 13.4 cm.
Circa 1780 – 85.

This cup depicts Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 – 1778) in old age and is based on an etching and engraving by Ingouf le Jeune, which was probably influenced by the (posthumous) bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
