A Meissen porcelain snuff box with a portrait of Friedrich Christian of Saxony

With later gold mountings. With a raised portrait of the Prince Elector inscribed "FRIDERICUS CHRISTIANUS REG PRINC POL & SAX" framed by gilded tendrils with "woodcut" style flowers in four reserves. The sides painted with insects and moths, the base with woodcut flowers. The inside of the lid with a flower and fruit still life, the interior gilded. Unmarked. Restored breakages to the lid, wear to the gilding. H 5, D 8.3 cm.
1747 - 60.

This relief portrait is based on a medal designed by Franz Andreas Schega (1711 - 1787), which he produced in several versions with portraits of Prince Friedrich Christian of Saxony (1722 - 1763) and Maria Antonia of Bavaria (1724 - 1780), presumably on occasion of their marriage. One of these medals is today housed in the SKD (inv. no. BGB1367).

Provenance

German private collection.
