Burgundy around 1440/1460

A mid 15th century Burgundian carved sandstone figure of the Virgin and Child

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse slightly flattened and only summarily worked. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Large figure of the Virgin designed for a frontal viewpoint. She is depicted standing and holding the infant Jesus over Her hip. The voluminous, block like composition shows little attention to detail, which suggests that the sculpture was originally created for an outdoor setting.
The lower edge removed and replaced in plaster to ensure the stability of the work. Significant signs of weathering. The Child's foot and the object (or bird?) in His hands partially lost. Right shoulder of the Child loosely attached. Height 109 cm.

Provenance
