Paul Meyerheim came from a family of artists in Berlin, but his great role model was his friend Adolf Menzel, with whom he shared an interest in animal and zoological motifs. He soon became known as a virtuoso painter of exotic animals and was commissioned, among other things, to decorate the vestibule of the antelope house in the Berlin Zoological Gardens with murals. Although Paul Meyerheim also painted other subjects, such as landscapes and portraits, his animal paintings are considered to be among his most important works.
