A rare Höchst porcelain figure of a theriac seller

Depicting a man standing in contrapposto wearing a blue jacket, purple breeches and black boots and hat. He holds aloft two vials of tincture in both hands. Impressed marks B and 2, green painter's monogram IZ. Restored chips to the hat and hem of the jacket, older retouches to the box. H 15.3 cm.
Electoral Mainz Manufactory Höchst, around 1750 - 53, painted by Johannes Zeschinger.

Kurt Röder attributed this model to Simon Feilner, an artist who later emigrated to Fürstenberg, in 1930. Röder found three versions of the figure, including one in the Adolf Beckhard collection that is decorated almost identically except for the black shoulder strap, which is gilded here. The figure may, however, have been modelled by Carl Vogelmann, compare the peasant couple in the Frankfurt Historical Museum, inv. no. X 25 864
