Gerhard Marcks

Venus, sich die Haare aufbindend
1960

Bronze. Height 143 cm. Artist's signum front right of square plinth and foundry mark "GUSS BARTH RINTELN" verso on edge of plinth and with cast number. Cast 4/6. - Grey-green, partly vivid patina due to outdoor exposure.

The model here was Merwe Scherneck, after whom Gerhard Marcks also modelled other sculptures (cf. Rudloff 742, 743 and 774).

Apparently Marcks liked the figure so much that he labelled it "Venus" - the ideal female figure. This copy was made especially for the previous owner. The intended edition of 6 copies was apparently not cast.
