Schönhausen Palace is located in Niederschönhausen, north of Berlin. Built in the 17th century by Countess Dohna-Schlobitten, it was acquired in 1691 by Prince Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg, who later became King Frederick I of Prussia. In 1740, King Frederick II gave the castle to his wife Elisabeth Christine, née Princess of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern. From then on, she spent almost every summer there until her death in 1797. After that, the palace was only occasionally occupied by the royal family. Princess Marianne, the wife of Prince Wilhelm, used it for several summers until Luise's sister Friederike finally decided to have the former garden transformed into an English style park by Peter Joseph Lenné. This small, rare porcelain painting shows the state of the garden, presumably immediately after its completion in 1829.
