A rare Meissen porcelain tea bowl from the Hosennestel service

Painted on either side with Chinoiserie scenes in strapwork surrounds, on either side with figures on brackets. With gilt lace edges. Conjoined gold monogram of Sabina Auffenwerth "SAW". H 4.4. D 7.8 cm.
The porcelain fired before 1723, decorated by Sabina Hosennestel (Auffenwerth), c. 1731.

A large number of "hausmaler" pieces dating from the 1720s and 1730s can be attributed to the Auffenwerth family. Two published and well-known services are thought to have been decorated by the most talented of the three Auffenwerth sisters, Sabina (1706 - 1782). Initially a pupil of her father, Johann Auffenwerth (1662 - 1728), she developed into a true master of porcelain and enamel decoration.
Like the gilt decor carried out in the Augsburg workshop of the brothers Abraham and Bartholomäus Seuter, the designs of the sisters, Johanna, Anna Elisabeth and especially those of Sabina Auffenwerth are equal in quality to those produced in the manufactory. In his 1985 article (Keramos, issue 109, 1985, p. 3 - 16), Christopher Clarke succeeded in proposing a convincing date for the decoration of the service, namely to the occasion of Sabina's marriage to Isaac Hosennestel on 13th December 1731.
