A fine Tokyo school ebony netsuke of Hotei enveloped in a furoshiki. Late 19th century

The chubby laughing face of Hotei looks out from a wrapping cloth (furoshiki), the coral handle of his fan is stuck into the furoshiki’s knot, the fan leaf decorated in silver wire and tiny pearls of metal and glass. The furoshiki displays small takaramono (fundô, shppô and chôji) of bone, partly stained green, and pewter(?). Inscribed Tôkoku and Bairyû on an inlaid gold seal.
