A Kyoto school boxwood netsuke of a shishimai mask. Late 18th/early 19th century

The square-shaped head with bulging eyes and flat nose covered all over with hair tufts and locks, the lower jaw opens downwards to reveal an upper and lower row of teeth. The eyes with remains of black lacquer and makie.
