A fine Edo school boxwood netsuke of a shishi dancer, by Shûmin. Mid 19th century

Seated with a large shishi mask, the body entirely covered by the mask cloth, the right hand pulling down the lower jaw thus revealing the head of a boy inside. The boy’s eyes of glass, himotôshi lined with green-stained and natural ivory. Signed Shûmin.
