A boxwood netsuke of a poet. Mid-19th century

Seated on his heels, wearing a han-gappa and a tsukin on his head, holding slips of paper (tanzaku) and a yatate in his right hand.
Height 4.6 cm

The tanzaku slips are used to write poems on, the han-gappa is a travelling coat, and the yatate is a portable brush with an ink well. The figure possibly represents the poet Matsuo Bashô, famous for his poems composed on his extensive travels throughout Japan.
