A very fine and lively early ivory netsuke of a laughing Gama Sennin. 18th century

The tall sennin stands in tattered and loosely belted robes which reveal his skinny chest and back; he holds a toad to his belly while making a gesture of surprise with the other hand; another small toad sits on his shoulder. The eye pupils of black wood or horn. Restored.
Height 10.7 cm

For this type of sennin netsuke with a large square head see the discussion of Alain Ducros in his article “Satsuma Ivory Netsuke”, in: International Netsuke Society Journal, vol. 36, no. 2 (Summer 2016), fig. 1, 9 and 15.
