An amusing Edo-school ivory netsuke of two monks next to a bell, by Shôunsai. Mid-19th century

Both seated to either side of a large bell and covering their ears, one of the monks with prayer beads. Signed Shôunsai.
Height 2.4 cm; width 4.6 cm

The bell could be an allusion to the bell of Miidera, carried up Mount Hiei by Benkei so that the sound of the bell would bring pleasure to the monks, or the bell of Dôjôji underneath which Anchin burned to death and is now mourned by his fellow monks.
