A rare boxwood netsuke of a kirin. Late 18th century

Seated on its haunches, howling and raising its head with a single horn, flames emanating from the joints and the bushy mane well carved. The eyes and other details accentuated with black ink. Hairline cracks.
Height 9.3 cm

This is the classical model of a Tomotada kirin, even if the himotôshi drilled straight through the belly is somewhat unusual.
