An ivory netsuke of a bird-of-paradise. Early 19th century

Perched on a ring fixed to the top of a pillar, with six long and finely engraved peacock-like feathers bearing a nice golden yellow patina.
Height 5.5 cm

The so-called bird-of-paradise (jap. Sankôchô) is said to be Japan's most beautiful bird. For a more dynamic study of the same motif see Neil Davey, The M.T. Hindson Collection, London 1982, p. 50.
