Exhibition of a new series of sculptures at Lempertz Brussels
Lempertz is proud to present a selection of new sculptures by the Belgian artist Stijn Ank at its venue in Brussels from May 30 until June 29, 2024. Stijn Ank is internationally acclaimed for his challenging, large-scale (often site-specific) sculptures. Most recently, his outdoor sculpture 'Phoenix', exhibited in the Jardin des Tuileries of the Louvre in Paris, was welcomed with considerable praise.
Less known are Ank's delicate finger exercises, sculptural sketches that the artist kept himself busy with throughout recent years. This daily occupation has resulted in an expanding group of experimental, yet intimate works.
For the first time, a carefully curated selection of these elegant sculptures will now be publicly displayed and shown to a large audience. The hall of Lempertz Brussels, adorned with a glass roof, provides the perfect setting for unveiling these previously undisclosed works.
Trained as an architect, Ank acquired widespread recognition for the particular use of plaster in his work. Through an intuitive process, sculptures are created by pouring pigmented plaster into a continuously changing mold. His body of work perpetually revolves around construction and destruction, flowering and decay, rejection, and resurgence. The sculptures possess a timeless, organic quality, not unlike that found in ancient archaic cultures, where man was still spiritually connected to his immediate surroundings.
