Alfred Hrdlicka - biography

Alfred Hrdlicka studied painting under Josef Dobrowsky and Albert Paris Gütersloh and sculpture under Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Art in Vienna. Hrdlicka’s expressive sculptures are about subjects such as war, murder, politics and religion as he sought to illustrate human failure, both past and present. Being a committed communist, he created numerous public monuments which caused quite a stir (e.g. his Monument against War and Fascism, 1991, on Albertina-Platz in Vienna), depicting historical events.
