Salvador Dali Y Domenech biography

Salvador Dali created not only a diverse oeuvre as painter, sculptor, graphic artist, writer and stage designer, the Spanish artist honed above all his own myth, sparing no effort to shock his contemporaries, to memorialise himself, and to give a face to Surrealism.

Salvador Dali – An angry dreamer between anarchism and art

Salvador Dali was born Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech in Figueres, Catalonia on 11 May 1904 – a memorable event, the self-confident artist was convinced, but one which was initially not suitably appreciated by his contemporaries. The son of a notary, Dali was christened under the name of his brother who had died only a few months before and the artist maintained his whole life that he was the reincarnation of his brother. Salvador Dali’s childhood was strained, caught between the strictness of his father and motherly love which led to outbursts of rage, daydreaming and tall stories from a young age. He reacted jealously to the birth of his younger sister Ana María, set up his own room in the attic and there painted his first works on the lids of hatboxes. At the age of ten he adopted the Impressionist painter Ramon Pichot i Gironès, who lived in his neighbourhood, as his idol, and four years later became enthused by l’art pompier. Politically he showed solidarity in his youth with the anarchists, but despite difficulties, he graduated school in 1922.

His own paths, a break with the academy and the first scandals

His obvious drawing talent gave Salvador Dali access to the Madrid Art Academy where he socialised with Frederico García Lorca and Luis Buñuel, and made his first film with the latter: An Andalusian Dog was a string of surrealistic scenes with no real plot. Both artists were also interested in the writings of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, whom Salvador Dali later credited as one of his life’s key discoveries. After meeting Pablo Picasso on a trip to Paris, Dali was expelled from the Madrid Academy as he was no longer willing to subject himself and his art to evaluation by his teachers. He experimented with Cubism, Pointillism and Futurism and moved increasingly to Surrealism which would become formative for his work. His participation in the film The Golden Age sparked his first scandal and led to the break-up of his friendship with Luis Buñuel. Dali’s success as a painter with his first solo exhibitions was somewhat less controversial.

Connection and quarrel with the Surrealists, ascent to an icon

Through Joan Miró, Salvador Dali came into contact with the Paris Surrealists and associated with Magritte, Hans Arp, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Tristan Tzara, Man Ray and Paul Éluard, from whom he unceremoniously stole his wife, Gala Éluard. As Dali’s muse and manager in the following fifty years, Gala played a significant role in Salvador Dali’s rise to become the most commercially successful artist of his generation. Dali’s increasing politicisation and growing artistic differences eventually led to his exclusion from the Surrealist group; accused of fascism because he had made Adolf Hitler the uncritical subject of his pictures several times, he responded with characteristic chutzpah that he was neither a fascist nor a communist, but simply Dali. After several years in the USA, the artist finally settled in Spain to become a world-famous icon of 20th century art with his complex pictorial worlds and eccentric private life.
Salvador Dali died in Figueres, his birthplace and hometown, on 23 January 1989.
